Description
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This unusual item is from Jiangsu province in Eastern China. It was used as a child's crib, set on rockers to help lull the baby asleep. Each side is panelled, with mountains and floral designs in carved relief. The top rail is supported by rounded, turned posts and above each corner sits a carved 'foo dog' - mythical guardians of Chinese culture that were thought to provide protection against evil for the child sleeping inside.
The crib has a removable lid so that the baby could be covered over if required, maintaining darkness and fending off any unwanted visitors in the form of stray cats, dogs or other animals. Still functional as a cradle today, or just as a statment piece and storage unit perhaps for blankets and bedding.
