Description
Beijing, circa 1920
Desk used by the scholarly classes in China were often quite narrow, but this one is deep enough to be practical today as a desk in a home office. Produced in Beijing in the early twentieth century, It has the usual horse hoof shaped feet at the end of its narrow legs and three good sized drawers - ideal for papers and pens. The drawers each still have their original ring handles, with rear mounts in the form of bats - a symbol in China for good luck. The dark lacquer finish is original, worn around the feet but otherwise largely intact. The black finish on the desk's top surface has worn to show light greys and browns, with the lovely patterned grain of the elm wood showing through.
