Description
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This unusual chair is from Jiangsu province in eastern China, produced towards the end of the nineteenth century. It is in an unfamilar style, with a wide, openly carved backrest and straight seat posts. The apron and spandrels at the front of the chair are carved in the form of stylised dragons, but the main decorative feature is the backrest, beautifully carved from a single piece of wood to show a single, robed female figure. The top rail above is carved in relief with a floral pattern.
