Description
This ornately decorated chest is from Kutch in India's Gujarat province and is known as a Damchiya. It would have been filled with gifts and presented by the bride's family to the bridgroom's as a dowry. Normally the items inside would include gold jewellery, silks and other valuable family possessions. The chest is beautifully carved and would once have been brightly painted. The colours have faded to softer tones, but it is easy to imagine the original vibrant effect, enchanced by the shiny, mirrored glass insets on the front. Today these unusual pieces make a fantastic centerpiece in any room, and can be used for storage as sideboards or storage cabinets in a living room.
