This round wooden container is from Zhejiang province in south east China. Made from beech, it would have been used originally to hold rice or other foods. A brass hoop supports the container at the top and bottom and the circular top is decorated with a simple scrolling pattern in carved relief. Also known as a temple lion, these mythical beasts were mythical guardians in Chinese culture, thought to ward off evil spirits.
