Description
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This long, horizontal carved panel once formed part of an internal divider in a Chinese home, where it would have been affixed high up to define the room's length or breadth. Today it would make a lovely, unique feature on a wall, hung above a bed or sideboard.
It was produced in Jiangsu province, eastern China towards the end of the nineteenth century, made from elm and with a rich finish that brings out the beauty of the material. Five smaller panels are fitted within the wide outer frame, each one beautifully decorated in a combination of open and relief carving. The central section of each panel is shaped and carved with various characters, depicting scenes from Chinese legend. These are each set within a floral pattern in open carving.
