Description
Anhui, circa 1850
Crafted from beech wood and showcasing ornate geometric patterns, this distinct arched panel once formed part of a traditional Chinese four-poster marriage bed. Preserved as a single separate unit, it could today function as an unconventional headboard, as a frame for a television or simply as a stunning statement piece to stand alone on a wall. The most impressive decoration is reserved for the distinctive round frames at the base of each side of the panel. Each of these is carved in deep relief on several levels, giving a three dimensional feel. These carvings show detailed battle scenes, with figures on horseback, on foot or in boats carrying swords and spears and engaged in combat. A rare, highly unusual piece that offers a versatile architectural feature and eye-catching talking point for any interior.
