Description
Zhejiang, circa 1900
The carved upper section of the frame of this lovely mirror was orginally a lintel, set over a doorway in a home in Hebei province in northern China. The intricate design is carved through with various figures including drummers, flag bearers and a figure mounted on horseback - perhaps a representation of the original owner. At the base of the lintel section are two carved 'foo dogs' to ward against evil spirits. This original carved section has been extended to form a full frame for the rectangular shaped mirror, which is designed to be hung in landscape format using the brass hangers fitted at the top.
