Having already designed and installed the open plan kitchen and the en suite bath and shower room in this large Victorian home, we were delighted to be commissioned by our clients to undertake their next big project, the main bedroom, in association with interior designer, Karen Jackman of Karen Jackman Interiors

Our client’s brief was to design a soft luxurious bedroom with plenty of internal storage, a dressing table and a statement headboard. Our client has a love of mid-Century style, so while the look had to be contemporary, it also needed to have 20th Century accents too. We performed a lot of research and found images that would fit the look our client was seeking and a geometric pattern was presented for the wardrobe cabinetry, yet with a circular design to soften the aesthetic. We also recommended floating bedside tables, and a similar style floating dressing table, with a hint of the design repeated for each.

The headboard was handmade in parts to seem like a single piece that include the floating bedside cabinets with mirrored panels above them on either side of a tall centrepiece, which is upholstered in Delft Velvet in Noir by Designers Guild. The same fabric is used for the electric Roman blind and the cushions that accessorise the room, while the curtains are Anshu Zinc, with voiles in Bellavista Blossom, also by Designers Guild. On either side of the bed and integrated within the headboard are LED reading lights, while in front of the bedside cabinets, and also illuminating the dressing table area, are Ada pendant lights by John Lewis. The bedlinen is by The White Company and the velvet bedspread is by Laura Ashley. The room and the cabinetry are decorated in Worsted by Farrow & Ball.

The wardrobe features two mirrored centre panel doors that were designed and handmade to perfectly fit the dimensions of the bedroom. Internal cabinetry on either side of the central section was designed on a ‘his and hers’ basis with pull-down and fixed hanging rails plus pull-out shoe storage, all lit using rebated LED lighting strips in natural white. The top half of the central wardrobe is used for accessories, with dedicated shelves for our client’s designer handbag collection. These feature a mirrored back panel and LED lighting that entirely showcases the shelving. Dark grey pull-out drawers comprise the lower half and include one dedicated to storing jewellery with separate compartments, and the rest with glass window fronts are at the base for easy access to folded clothing and woolens.

The floating dressing table has a marble-look finish surface that is also used for the bedside cabinets. It features one long drawer, with space underneath for a stool upholstered in Varese Velvet in Cameo by Designers Guild, plus two further deep drawers, all to store makeup and accessories.

The two mid-century vintage 1960’s chairs are our client’s own. Originally from Germany they are also re-upholstered in Varese Velvet in Cameo by Designers Guild, which is repeated for the larger decorative cushions on the bed. The glass-topped modernist coffee table is also the client’s own and is in the style of a mid-century original by Japanese American artist, Noguchi.
