Description
Dongbei, circa 1880
This sideboard, in a simple square cornered design and worn red lacquer finish, is in a traditional style of furniture produced in the Dongbei (northeast) region of China. Its painted geometric pattern showing various flora and fauna, now faded but still visible, is a common theme on these cabinets, which would have doubled in the home both for storage but also as altars for ancestor worship, with incense and offerings placed on the top surface. Although the red lacquer finish has lost its vibrancy, it still has a lovely tone that would add a welcome warmth to any setting.
The cabinet is made from poplar wood and the top surface and sides in black lacquer provide a rich contrast with the front. The unique square door hardware and hinges are original, as are the small flower shaped brass studs on each outer frame - another typical detail of the style. Originally the outer panels would have been fixed, with the inside accessed only via the central opening. To give more practical access to the full interior, these panels have been modified, creating double-hinged doors that open out in concertina style. The removable post between the central doors is removable, adding a stylistic accent. From its deep red finish to its intricate, hand-painted detail, the sideboard is a standout piece that would provide both functional storage and a vibrant touch of colour to any space.
