This colourful blanket trunk is a lovely example of the type of chests commonly referred to as opera trunks in China. The vibrant, colourful paintings on the front have worn over time to softer colours, but are in excellent condition, with the two central figures and surounding floral designs still clear. The man and woman depicted in the main painting most likely represent a pair of lovers from a traditional Chinese opera or folk tale. They are flanked by various flowers including a pair of pomegranates to the right hand side - a symbol in China for fertility. The theme suggests that the trunk might have been produced as a gift for newlyweds, perhaps along with contents of silks, fabrics and other treasures. The hinged lid has a simple metal clasp fitted at the front to allow it to be secured.
Opera chests were typically decorated with vibrant, symbolic floral designs or depictions of well-known literary tales or popular operas of the era. The name comes from the fact that the trunks might have been used by traveling opera companies to transport their equipment and outfits while on tour, but in most cases it is more probable they were used in households for clothing storage, with the paintings being primarily used as a means of incorporating visual appeal and colour through popular themes. Today, these trunks serve as one-of-a-kind storage options and practical side tables next to a sofa or bed.
