The Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) is a beautiful flower native to Turkey and the Middle East, that has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal benefits. The poppy contains opium alkaloids which can be used to reduce pain, stress and inflammation. It is also used in traditional medicine to treat a range of ailments. It is still illegal to grow this variety of poppy in the US. Although the seeds are not illegal, and indeed could be on a bagel you bought in your local coffee shop!
Poppies are laden with symbolism but this variety represents peace, sleep, and pleasure.
This image is created from 100 shots at different focal points that have been merged to create deep focus and definition. The distinctive seed head is clearly visible with its fascinating star-shaped motif.
