Description
Shanxi, circa 1880
This old elm table showcases rounded legs and is in a traditional Chinese style referred to as 'An', with the legs being recessed and slotting directly into the single plank, extended table top above. An old repair is evident towards the bottom of one leg, with a metal brace fitted. The table's slim size allows for easy placement in smaller areas, serving as a console or side table. The original black finish has faded and worn particularly on the top, revealing the exquisite natural grain of the elm wood and creating a unique patina. The legs are reinforced by two stretchers on the sides and a single, irrebular stretcher to the front and rear. A simple, shallow curved apron at each side adds detail. With a timeless and uncomplicated design, the table's narrow shape offers versatility, making it a chic and practical addition to any space.
