A hand-loomed Thai textile made up into a smart, drum shade…

The Product: Black and white lampshade in Thai ticking stripe

I love the appeal of textural, slubby, handwoven fabrics with a modern rustic feel and this Thai hill-tribe ticking, masquerading as a chic, black and white lampshade, does not disappoint. The vintage Thai textile is woven from hemp fibre and was sourced in the Hmong markets of northern Thailand and Chatuchak market in Bangkok.
The Lowdown

The handwoven textiles are sourced as miniature bolts of hand-loomed fabric and each one has it’s own unique character. Some have a soft handle – much like the feel of thick, open-weave linen – and a natural-hued ground cloth. Other bolts of an almost identical design have a whiter ground cloth and a stiffer, more structured feel. However, all will work brilliantly as chic, drum shades.

The height of the lampshades are limited to the width of the handloom, so these striped pink, black and white lampshades can be 25cm tall at most. This also maximises use of the design. However, we can also make shallower shades should you wish. Our standard base diameters are 25cm (with 21cm height) and 40cm (with 25 cm height) – the latter shown here.
Styling Ideas?

I have a pair of these drum shades flanking a sofa and they feel both smart and relaxed. Ethnic textile lampshades not only introduce colour and pattern to a room scheme, but they also add an additional layer of textural interest. A key component of any successful design scheme.

Largescale drum shades such as these provide a gentle, pool of atmospheric light directed up and down, as opposed to a directional task light. They are simply lined with white, fire retardant PVC, to enable the lampshade to glow when illuminated.
The Detail

Our standard striped, pink, black and white lampshades measure 25cm base diameter x 21cm height or 40cm base diameter x 25cm height and are handmade to order. Please note these lampshades showcase unique, handwoven textiles and as such, there may be slight imperfections in the weave. This is all part of their artisanal appeal.
