Break the compost up to remove compacted lumps, mix well so the fertiliser is evenly distributed throughout. The compost should be loose and light to the touch to make filling the pots easier. When potting up plants the new pot should be one size bigger, this allows room for the plant to grow and reduces the risk of waterlogging. Pots should have one or more holes in the base or the option to create holes to provide drainage. To prevent compost being washed out, before filling pots with compost, place broken terracotta or stones over the drainage hole(s). To refresh the top layer of compost of established plants, remove the top 3-5cm of old compost from the surface and replace with fresh compost. Use a pot saucer or pot cover to protect interior surfaces.
