A Year Of Modular Success - Shelved Celebrates One Year Of Business
A lot can happen in a year. And for Shelved, that's certainly been the case…
As of May 2022, Shelved have officially been in operation for an entire year. Following their initial opening in May of last year, it's safe to say that they've made a bit of an impact with their unique, contemporary, British-made modular furniture.
Originally opening their digital doors to the world during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Shelved have managed to overcome countless challenges to build an established, innovative brand in an extremely demanding industry. The pandemic itself brought about a swathe of difficulties for businesses across the globe, but Shelved took them in their stride, diversifying and evolving in some of the most challenging times for any brand.
But who says that challenges are a bad thing? When facing adversity, regardless of the situation, these challenges can bring excitement, and that's exactly what happened with Shelved. Their product became an instant hit, and the business has developed an envious reputation for quality and innovation. Shelved has grown significantly in a very short space of time. It's been an exciting year for Shelved, and their success so far is showing no signs of slowing down. With plans to expand the business by employing more staff in order to meet the rising demand for the product, Shelved are set to grow at an increasing rate.
“It’s been a really exciting 12 months for Shelved! Launching a new venture in the middle of a global pandemic was always going to be difficult, but we’ve gone from strength to strength and the feedback we’ve been receiving from our customers has been amazing. We’re looking forward to continuing to build our community of customers, and we've got some exciting things planned for the year ahead.”
- Jonathan Clark, Senior Designer at Shelved.
Shelved have featured in some of the UK's most prestigious publications, and their innovative system has found it's place in countless homes and spaces up and down the country, transforming living spaces with a distinctive look, intelligent functionality, and unrivalled adaptability. They are bringing a product to a more consumer-focused market, adding a new arm to the parent company, Rack Systems, the UK's leading specialist OEM fabricator of office and educational furniture components who service a vast B2B audience.
“The creation of Shelved has been a fascinating business exercise. For several years I’ve wanted the company to have a product of its own, diversify its route to market strategy and find a new customer base preferably via an online ecommerce presence and all hopefully without upsetting our existing customer base. Shelved is the embodiment of that strategy and I am so pleased we have done it and extremely proud of what the team have achieved.”
- Richard Field, Managain Director at Rack Systems.
It's easy to see the appeal of the Shelved modular furniture system. For one, it looks fantastic - the framework's clean lines and the range of available timeless finishes make it a system in which the aesthetics are as flexible as the modular nature of the system itself. Regardless of the configuration, this is a system that's built to look incredible in any space or with any décor. Even in its simplest form, the Shelved system becomes a feature, not just a function. But it's not just the looks that have made Shelved a hit with homeowners, tenants, and business proprietors across the UK for the past 12 months…
As the modular name suggests, the Shelved system is an ever-evolving storage solution that can be changed and adapted at any time. You can add more storage with extra shelving and cabinets to help with decluttering, hook up a desk and create a serene home office space, or even convert a standard shelving unit into an envious bridged TV stand and media hub. Those changes can really start to come in handy as you go through life too. You might move home, or you may just decide that you want to move your furniture into a different space altogether. The modular nature of the system means you can adjust the layout to suit your needs, even changing the size and shape so that it fits perfectly in a new area.
It's this combination of a sleek, multi-fitting appearance and its modular adaptability that have contributed to the Shelved system's success and popularity over the past year. People have been able to get their hands on furniture with a bespoke feel, without the bespoke limitations. Their clever 3D configurator has been a huge factor in that. Shoppers have had the opportunity to essentially build their very own entirely unique configuration directly on the Shelved website, letting people create a system that's truly built around them from the very beginning. Shelved even provide a handy augmented reality app that lets people test out how their creation will look in their home before they decide to buy it.
Buyers can also purchase their Shelved system with a guilt-free conscience too. Shelved pride themselves on their sustainable approach to manufacturing, creating the system using a combination of both recycled and fully recyclable materials (even 95% of the packaging is made from recyclable material, with limited use of plastics where possible). There's no sacrifice on durability either - it's a system that's built to last with a solid steel framework made from 55% recycled content steel, providing a solid, sustainable structure and a system that's certainly not designed to be put into landfill. And it's all made in the beautiful heart of North Yorkshire.
Shelved have been in operation for 1 year, beginning in May 2021.
In the last 12 months, Shelved have appeared in 'Vogue' 'ELLE Decoration', 'Grand Designs', 'Ideal Home', 'dezeen Design Magazine', 'Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms', 'The Independent', 'lisadawsonstyling.com', 'OX Homes', 'i-Build', and 'Scotland on Sunday'.
They have developed a unique modular furniture and storage system, manufactured using high-quality and sustainable materials, all in the heart of North Yorkshire.
Shelved forms a part of the family-run business Rack Systems, who have been in operation for 30 years.
Shelved brings premium-grade furniture to a domestic/consumer audience, fighting against the blight of 'fast-fashion' disposable furniture with a highly adaptable and durable system.
They take a sustainable approach to the manufacturing process of the Shelved system, with over 95% of the packaging being created from recyclable material with limited use of plastics where possible. They also use 55% recycled content steel in the production of the system, with the aim to constantly improve on this percentage as time goes by.
The Shelved system is easy to build and adapt, with easy-access assembly videos directly on the Shelved website.
The modular nature of the system enables individuals to create an almost bespoke system that's perfectly suited to their needs and desires.
Shelved believe in the approach of buying well and buying once, delivering exceptional value to their customers with a product they can be proud of.
Shelved offer a diverse range of pre-designed furniture configurations for various uses and spaces, including Feature Shelving, TV Units, Vinyl Storage, Sideboards, Home Office Furniture, Cabinets and more.
Shelved allow people to design their own configurations using their proprietary 3D configurator on the website, whilst an intelligent AR app enables people to view the system in their home before deciding to make their purchase.

Transform Your Home With Broken-Plan Living
The past couple of years have driven us all, as a global population, to make some serious adaptations to the way we live our lives, and many of those changes are here to stay...
Open-plan, meet broken-plan...
You might have heard of broken-plan living recently. But what is it exactly?
In short, broken-plan means making intelligent use of the space in an open-plan area of your home with unique zoning methods like non-permanent dividers/partitions, flooring, furniture, or anything else you can use to create divisions and individual spaces. It typically revolves around converting the layout to create a space with more separation and unique features without entirely closing things up.
Why choose broken-plan over open-plan?
More often than not, people are finding open-plan spaces in their homes simply don't work for them anymore. With the new normal and people spending a lot more time in their homes, individual and personal space within the home has rapidly become a necessity for so many of us. Whether it's for work, study or leisure, having that individualised space can make a world of difference to both productivity and overall enjoyment.
Changing to broken-plan - how to do it
Changing to a broken-plan layout can offer you and your family a whole world of benefits. Here's how you can create the perfect broken-plan space in your home with ease...
Create large dividing features
It is maybe one of the more obvious starting points, but creating that element of separation in a space can be done quickly and easily with some large-scale features.
Freestanding fireplaces are a great way to divide your space and provide room-carving qualities to make separate zones whilst giving you a striking centre piece
Large sculptures, artistic screens or free-hanging art - these are a slightly less permanent option compared to a built-in fireplace, but can create that same distinctive feature area that still provides separation whilst being eye-catching and unique
Feature shelving is a fantastic choice if you want a blend of the non-permanent artistic and expressive design with the functionality and storage capabilities of high-quality furniture, and with modular options like our Shelved system, you can change the look, layout and functionality as and when you want. Shelving also maintains that natural open lightness associated with open-plan layouts whilst simultaneously giving you that separation and zoning
Contemplate the use of half-walls
Half-walls are a great alternative to completely blocking off an entire space from top to bottom. Not only can a half wall provide a subtle but effective space division to give you two distinctive zones without completely walling everything off, but it can also provide a great place to add interest to other features of your space, too.
Build alternative workspaces
Particularly if you're working from home, it can sometimes be difficult to feel entirely connected to your work without enough separation, but also make it more difficult to entirely disconnect from that same environment at the end of the day. If you don't have the option to create entirely separate work or study areas within your home, a work "zone" in any room could be just what you need for that physical and psychological separation both during and after your day.
You could use our modular home office systems to create the perfect self-contained space that can be transformed and adapted as your life and needs change. This doesn't even have to be in an open-plan space - if the room you're using is spacious enough, and you use it for multiple different things or even if there's more than one of you working in there, this is the perfect way to give yourself and others that productivity-boosting zone that's vital for a healthy work-life balance.
Plan a centralised media hub and experiment with furniture placement
In a similar way to both your dedicated office spaces or feature pieces, you could create something similar with your media devices and collections. By incorporating your TV and ancillary devices into something such as a bridged TV unit, you can effectively create a structured area for enjoying your favourite movies and shows that has a sense of its own zoning. You can create a similar effect for your music collection with an all-in-one vinyl storage unit that holds your records as well as your audio equipment. It's entirely up to you. If you want to change things around or experiment with the size and layout of your units, the modular nature of our Shelved system is perfect.
Ready to get started with broken-plan layouts in your home?
It's easy to see the appeal of broken-plan - the improved privacy, enhanced utility efficiency, boosts to productivity and quality of life - there's so much to be gained from making a few select changes to your home. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to get creative and carry out a complete transformation, but with a lot less work than you might expect...
Don't be fooled into thinking that these transformations are just for homeowners either. Whether you own your property or rent it, you can achieve a huge amount without having to worry. Our modular furniture is one of the most effective ways to achieve it. You can create the perfect piece that fits your needs. You can grow it, shrink it, or change it around entirely. You're completely in control, and you're never stuck with your choice. If your needs change, or you need to move it (or even move yourself to an entirely new property), our Shelved systems can move and change with you.
