Description
Shanxi, circa 1900
This charming wooden box would once have been used for storing personal posessions, either in the home or when travelling. It is in its original finish, the red lacquer on the top of the lid in particular now worn over time to give a lovely, aged patina. The front of the trunk features detailed paintings of the cups and vessels used for tea, suggesting that these might have been the box's original contents. To the left a bird perches on a blossom tree branch overlooking the two cups, while a black surrounding frame is dotted with cream flowers. The hinged lid is fitted on the front with a simple metal clasp to allow the chest to be secured.
