With the mercury rising and summer on the horizon, homeowners may feel they can stop thinking about their heating bills.
But according to the experts at UKRadiators.com, as the weather warms, some homeowners are making mistakes that could lead to rising heating bills.
Rob Nezard, Managing Director of UKRadiators.com, said: “When it comes to heating costs, it can be tempting to take your foot off the gas during the warmer months.
“But there are still some key steps homeowners can take now to save cash on their bills.”
Here Rob shares his top six tips for homeowners to save money on their heating bills this spring.
Check the Clock
Unlike smartphones and devices, most heating appliances need manual adjustments when the clocks change.
Rob said: “Now we have switched to British Summertime, check to see if your heating system is still operating on a winter schedule. And don’t forget to check heating timers are set at the right times for the longer daylight hours.”
Adjust Boiler Flow Temperature
We might be into British Summertime but there will still be the odd day when we need to pop the heating on. On these occasions, adjusting your boiler flow – the heat at which water is pumped out of the boiler into the radiator – can save cash.
Rob said: “Now is a good time to lower your boiler flow temperature to ensure your system uses less energy while still warming the home.”
Switch Dual Fuel Appliances Over to Electric
Some heating appliances work on a dual fuel system, and now is the time to switch them from central heating to electric.
Rob said: “Some appliances, such as towel rails, can run off electricity as opposed to central heating. Make the switch now to cut down on unnecessary use of central heating.”
Service Your Systems
Often, homeowners will service and maintain their boiler when something goes wrong – which is typically during the colder months.
Instead, Rob advises homeowners to service their systems as the weather heats up.
Rob said: “Book annual boiler and central heating maintenance in spring. Demand will be lower which may mean it will cost less. Plus, any potential problems will be sorted before winter hits.”
Open the curtains
Want free heating? Open your curtains!
Rob said: “As soon as the sun comes out, throw open the curtains and allow its energy to heat the home.”
Roll with the Weather
British weather is unpredictable to say the least, so always expect some colder days in spring.
Rob said: “You may wish to switch your heating on the odd day or two, just take it day by day and don’t automatically revert to winter settings.”
