Victoria Foster, Interior Stylist at ScS, shares her expert advice: "The best way to keep your sofa fresh is to give it a thorough plump every week. If the seat cushions are removable, take them off and use your vacuum to remove any dust or dirt hiding underneath. The upholstery attachment on your vacuum is perfect for deep cleaning the entire sofa. If your seat cushions are double-sided, swap them around regularly to prevent sagging and distribute pressure evenly."
When it comes to tackling odours, a household staple can work wonders. Foster explains, "Baking soda is excellent for absorbing odours. Simply sprinkle a generous amount over the cushions and leave it for about 15 minutes — or even overnight for best results — before vacuuming it up. It works particularly well for eliminating pet odours, leaving your furniture feeling fresh and clean."
Leather furniture, such as leather sofas, also benefits from a seasonal refresh. "Leather requires occasional conditioning to stay soft and supple — ideally, about twice a year," Foster advises. "Start by gently wiping down the leather with a damp cloth. Once dry, apply a leather conditioner and work it into the material using circular motions with a soft cloth. This helps replenish the natural oils in the leather, leaving your sofa looking lush and shiny while also making it more resistant to spills and wear."
Spring cleaning isn't just about freshening up furniture; it's also an opportunity to declutter and create a more organised space. Foster notes, "Spring cleaning is the perfect time to organise and declutter your space for a more refreshing environment. Don’t forget to donate or sell items you no longer need."
For an extra fresh touch after vacuuming, Foster shares a simple trick: "Add a few drops of essential oil to a cotton wool ball and place it inside the vacuum bag. This will replace the usual musty smell with a pleasant fragrance."
With these expert tips, your home will be refreshed and ready to welcome the new season in style.
