The idea – affordable art prints replicating textiles

Having sold their interior design company of 15 years, Heidi and Polly both knew they wanted to do something drastically different from the smart show homes of their previous venture.

From their many years working in interiors, they knew there was a huge gap in the market for affordable artwork that was more elevated than just a framed print. They loved the idea of working with beautiful textiles and considered how they could combine the two. They realised that if they could replicate the incredible craftmanship and detail of the hand embroideries they had collected over the years and print them onto paper, they could create a product that was full of character and authenticity but accessible to all. Clothsmith was born.

The use of high-resolution scanning and printing software replicates the detail of original textiles in astounding detail (you really do have to look twice). Designs are then reworked and digitally enhanced to create unique and original pieces, the result being a collection of striking artworks that will sit comfortably in old and new homes alike.

Distinctive artwork & homewares

Two years of sourcing, researching, developing and testing began, adapting their beautiful finds for the contemporary home using modern digital techniques. Creating a product that was different to anything else available in the UK was absolutely key. The result is a collection of beautiful, framed textile prints. Understanding the needs of interior designers and homeowners looking for 'just the right piece' for a room, many of these can be customised to a specific size and bespoke framing options are available.

Alongside their flagship prints are a series of unique figurative prints, some mounted onto natural linen and others on canvas. Heidi and Polly have also designed a range of their own characterful patterns, inspired by the antique textiles they hold in their private collection, which cover their cushions and table linens. They are colourful, but in warm, muted tones.

Clothsmith co-founder Polly Haley says: “For many, finding a special piece of art, that doesn’t cost the earth, can be a daunting and intimidating process. We take so much joy in being part of this journey by unearthing one-of-a-kind textiles and transforming them into unique pieces of art. We want to transform the retail landscape for textiles: Clothsmith is about making beautiful and distinctive art accessible".

About Clothsmith:

In their early twenties, Heidi and Polly started a home staging company and threw everything they had at it over the years that followed, building it up into an award-winning interior design company that they went on to sell. Casting their entrepreneurial drive aside to focus on bringing up their young families (they now have 5 boys between them), they took a break before putting their creative minds together and starting their new venture, Clothsmith.

“I keep having to look over and over again at the prints, I can't get my head around the fact that they're not real embroideries. It's like it's playing tricks with my eyes." Anna, Scotland
