David Tragen adds new wall sculpture to his Marine Series

Since the pandemic, Cheshire based designer and artist David Tragen, has sought to diversify his portfolio and has now released the third sculpture, entitled Kelvinism, in his new Marine Series.

The way that water is displaced by a moving object such as boats or wildfowl was originally studied and defined by the physicist Lord Kelvin and is now known as The Kelvin Wake Pattern. Its formation depends on the relationship between the speed that the object travels and its size and is also affected by the depth of water.

David’s fascination with the themes of flow and equilibrium prompted a deeper dive into its topology in order to understand how it is formed. David points out, “Whilst a mathematical formula exists to recreate it, I have deliberately chosen to extract its essence by eye in order to create an abstracted dance of two interlinked patterns, connected by a fine bond.”

The source of the wave interference is unknown, however the curved canvas hints at an underlying force from where the movement originates. It is a snapshot of a moment in time, leaving unanswered questions not only as to the genesis of the waves but the path they will take. How will the dance continue and will the waves dissipate completely or take on a new form influenced by further external forces?

“The peaks and troughs of the wave forms are naturally in harmony and as an artist I have taken on the challenge of balancing motion and stillness to create a sense of excitement and equilibrium.”

This is a limited edition of 12 and David has cast the first piece in bronze resin and fibreglass, patinated the surface with a ‘weathered’ effect in a range of green hues and finished it with wax. The piece, which measures 1140 x 1140 x 90 mm, can be recommissioned on request and can be finished in a variety of ways depending on your project. Each limited edition piece comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

This addition to the Marine Series now sits alongside the swirling bronze, Maelstrom, and Halitrephes, a nod to a rare, deep sea jellyfish, in bronze resin and copper leaf.
