New year, new houseplants with Dobbies

Taking down decorations after the festive season can make our homes feel a bit bare, so January is the perfect time to welcome life and vibrancy back into your space with houseplants.

Whether you’re looking to fill the space your Christmas tree left, spruce up some empty shelves, or add a pop of greenery to a neutral bathroom, Dobbies’ new houseplant range for 2025 offers a varied selection for all areas of the home.

Dobbies’ Senior Plant Buyer, Claire Bishop chats through what houseplants people can find at the garden centre in the new year, and the benefits of bringing greenery indoors.

Botanical bathrooms

Claire says that houseplants can transform your bathroom into a serene, spa-like retreat, and notes that this is a great environment for some plant varieties to thrive. Ferns and other green plants are a good choice for bathrooms as they do well with humidity, and Succulents are also great for this room thanks to their compact nature.

When choosing plants for your bathroom, Claire says you should consider the light levels and temperature. Low-light plants like the air purifying Calathea (prayer plant) do well in bathrooms thanks to their ability to survive with little natural light, and will enhance your space with its visually striking foliage. Tillandsia, also known as Spanish Moss, is also a fantastic plant for bathrooms and can be styled hanging down from shelves with Ivy for a tropical vibe.

Kitchen greenery

If you’re looking to brighten up your kitchen and give it a fresh look and feel for the new year, Claire says there are plenty of houseplants that do well in this space. Fill empty shelves and corners with the air purifying Spathiphyllum, or Peace Lily. These elegant plants are proven to remove toxins from the air so can make your kitchen feel brighter and fresher, and they’re easy to look after, requiring little to no maintenance on a day-to-day basis.

Other houseplants that will elevate a kitchen environment include the Monstera, or Cheese plant. Ideal for making an impact, the dramatic Monstera with its glossy leaves is also an air purifier. Claire suggests pairing it with the Dypsis, or Parlour palm, as the different layers of textures and height will create an interesting effect.

Uplifting living spaces

Houseplants are a wonderful way to welcome joy into living spaces and can help dark rooms appear brighter with their vibrant leaves. For a full effect, Claire recommends grouping different sizes of plants together. Larger palms can be styled with small Chlorophytum comosums, or Spider plants, and trailing plants in baskets for a jungle feel.

Claire notes that larger climbing plants can be supported with moss poles to encourage growth and stability. Position these plants in a bright spot near a window but out of direct sunlight and water when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch.
