“By now, everybody in the interior design world has come across the term Hygge. Hygge is known as the art of creating cosiness and - because it's about creating a feeling and not a look - it's still completely relevant for the year ahead.
Wellbeing has been at the forefront of design trends for the last five years. It started with basic colour psychology and moved onto the oh-so-fashionable Danish concept of Hygge. More recently, the design world introduced the much broader concept of biophilic design and now, it seems, we're back to Hygge again - even if we are re-imagining it in different ways.
It's easy to transform any living space using the concept of Hygge but the most important element is colour. This is where we are taking the idea that earth tones are grounding and using it as a base for cosy, cocoon-like spaces. Muted paint palettes are grounding because they're related to tones we see in nature: dusky pink, pastel blue, earthy oranges and warm, olive greens.
After colour, texture becomes important to add depth and warmth to a space. Think chunky, hand-knitted woollen textures or bouclé fabrics. Contemporary soft furnishings take texture to a new level by combining fashionable fabrics with modern design - the popular knot cushion is the perfect example of this. Interesting shapes combine with natural textures for a modern look.
And finally, lighting is the final most important factor when building a Hygge interior. Layered lighting is popular because it incorporates plenty of different opportunities for ambient light sources. Table lamps dotted around the room emit a soft, warm glow. A floor lamp with light directed downwards keeps the room from feeling too bright but gives enough light to read a book beside it. And what about the current Hygge-inspired trend favoured by Nordic designers - the mushroom lamp. The latest mushroom lamps are LED powered which makes them energy efficient and easy to style as there is no need for wire points in your room."
