As the nights draw in and temperatures plummet, it’s essential to take preventative measures to protect your wooden outdoor products.
Exposure to harsh winter weather can cause wood to rot, warp, and deteriorate. But eco paint brand Thorndown is coming to the rescue of outdoor furniture, decks, fences and other wooden structures with its water-based wood care range.
The range, which is made up of Wood Preserver, Stain Blocking Primer and Wood Paint, has been formulated to ensure outdoor wooden furnishings and fixtures look great for longer. Each product performs a different function to protect and extend the lifespan of timber products.
Caroline Thornborough, Design Director of Thorndown, said: “By treating your wooden products with our wood care range before winter arrives, you can significantly extend their lifespan and prevent costly repairs or replacements.
“By taking the time to prep your outdoor products for winter, you can enjoy their beauty and functionality for years to come.”
As the name suggests, Wood Preserver will help protect wood from rot. Thorndown’s has been specially formulated to penetrate deep into the wood, providing protection against blue stain fungi and brown rot. It can be applied to softwood which hasn’t been treated with pressure or preservative chemicals.
A coat of Stain Blocking Primer, which will stop knot resin and tannins seeping through to the surface, should be applied before two coats of Wood Paint. Not only will Wood Paint give outdoor furnishings a refreshing new look, Thorndown’s Wood Paint also seals the timber, stopping water ingress which warps, splits, stains and damages timber, reducing its lifespan and beauty.
Here Caroline shares her top tips on applying Thorndown’s Wood Preserver to ensure gardens are winter ready:
- Pick your Day: Choose a bright day to give the Wood Preserver plenty of time to dry
- Clean the Surface: Before applying the Wood Preserver, ensure the surface is clean and free of dirt, debris, and any old flakes of paint
- Apply Evenly: Use a brush or roller to apply evenly to all surfaces. Use two coats for planed timber and one for roughly sawn timber
- Leave to dry for at least an hour. It will be ready to overcoat in 6 hours in fine dry weather
- Apply a Stain Blocking Primer and leave to dry for at least 30 minutes in fine dry conditions
- Thoroughly mix Wood Paint
- Apply using a good quality synthetic paint brush or roller with medium or smooth pile sleeve (Thorndown’s Wood Paint can also be applied with a sprayer)
- Paint the surface, going along with the grain and covering a whole stretch at a time for a patch-free coating
- Make sure you get into all the grooves and fully coat the surface
- Leave to dry for 30 minutes to one hour before applying the next coat
