As we step out of summer and head towards autumn, many of us are thinking about how to style our homes for the transitional season. By blending our favourite summer styling with autumnal elements, we make a much less sudden change without the need for a complete overhaul, which can be added to over time to complete a full and impactful autumn décor scheme.

There is no need to make dramatic changes at any point of seasonal styling. A simple and effective way to introduce seasonal elements can include the use of soft furnishings such as cushions and throws, or the artwork and ornaments we use to add personality to our space.

Layering textures works for every season, especially autumn. As the temperature begins to drop, we may reach for a throw to wrap ourselves in during the evening. When choosing throws and bedspreads, consider the pieces already in the room, for example the linen on the Love Story Naturelle Linen Upholstered Bed is a great base fabric to work with. Combine with faux fur or wool to create a welcoming and calming bedscape.

The colour scheme is also key to perfecting transitional styling. Starting with a neutral or earthy base for the walls, flooring and furniture gives you the freedom to experiment with colour as the seasons change. Add pops of pastels in spring or oranges and greens in autumn. This can also carry through to the flowers or foliage you use in the space. Dried foliage such as pampas or barley can be arranged to create an autumnal bouquet before being placed in a Festoon French Urn or even hung from a mantlepiece.

Typically, as the weather cools, we spend more time at home. We seek cosiness and comfort during this time and cushions are a guaranteed way to make evenings on the sofa or lazy mornings in bed even more inviting. We love the Handblock Print Cushion in Cinnamon Spice or Moss Green, especially when paired with a larger cushion such as the Mélange Velvet Cushion in Olive to add dimension and a variation of textures.

The lighting in a room plays a key role in how the space feels overall. Autumnal lighting often leans more towards a warmer and less stark feel, so opt for a warm lightbulb in a lamp with a darker base, such as the Lumière Une Table Lamp. Place on a side table to create a subtle and unobtrusive soft glow.
