Protect Perennials and Bulbs
Cut Back Perennials: Trim back perennials to a few inches above the ground, especially if they are prone to diseases. However, leave some seed heads for birds to eat and to add winter interest to the garden.
Mulch Around Perennials: Apply mulch around the base of perennials to insulate the roots from freezing temperatures. This also helps prevent the freeze-thaw cycle that can damage roots.
Plant Bulbs: Late fall is a good time to plant spring-blooming bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses. They require the cold period to bloom in spring.
