The Great Fairy Light Hunt

Autumn is traditionally the start of the ‘lighting season’ when the necessary functionality of light becomes playful. As the evenings lengthen, we have lantern parades, public illuminations, fireworks and of course Halloween and Diwali.

This year the rising cost of living and the fuel crisis might dim our desire for lighting – but it doesn’t have to. Lanterns are all about being playful and mobile and creating and defining space. And of course, how you light them up.

This year Derbyshire-based lighting company Paper Starlights is launching the Great Fairy Light Hunt to urge people to rediscover and repurpose their existing sets of fairy lights.

Use, Re-use. Repeat.

Company Director Andy Jupp explains: ‘Many people have sets of fairy lights lying around the house in various states of entanglement. This year we’re urging people to open boxes, look in drawers, untangle those lights - and make them live again’.

And not just live again. But, lit up inside a lantern, abandoned fairy lights can shine down on the celebrations of the future too.

Paper Starlights produce hand-made and fairly traded paper star lanterns. Flat-packed and re-usable, their lanterns can be lit up and installed in any indoor and sheltered outdoor location using battery operated LED lights. In addition to saving money and conserving resources, Andy also recommends using a lower wattage light source to enhance the ambient lighting effects created by their lanterns.

'Use a light source which gives off a soft twinkle to fill the space with a touch of magic’, he advises. ‘Our paper stars are hand punched with complex perforations which create atmospheric lighting effects. And our paper is specially chosen for luminescence which diffuses the light in a warm 3-dimensional glow. So, as well as getting a stunningly beautiful effect, you won't have to spend a fortune on Christmas lighting.’

‘It’s not just about saving money and conserving resources – a lower wattage light actually enhances the lighting effects!’ adds Andy

Saving money on lighting never looked so good.
