1.Choose the right sofa
Sofa size is of upmost importance in small spaces. Too big and it can make the room feel tiny; too small and there won’t be enough seating space.
Your
sofa shouldn’t block any walking paths and avoid pushing all furnishings against the walls. Instead, position the furniture around a focal point in the room, such as a TV or fireplace, which will serve as the room’s centre of attention.
2. Go for neutral colours
Neutral colours should be used in smaller living areas, as they help create the illusion of space. What’s more, this is also a very hot trend at the minute so going for a neutral palette will mean you’re in vogue.
If you do like a pop of colour, bring this through with accessories such as lamps, picture frames, cushions and blankets. Just don’t go too heavy on these as you could overpower the space.
3. Get creative with storage and furniture
Finding creative storage solutions, like an ottoman to put books in, or a sofa with pull out draws, will help the room look less cluttered. You’ll end up having more space, whilst keeping it as a functional living area.
4. Experiment with mirrors and lighting
A great way to make a room feel more spacious is by increasing the flow of light, so bringing in mirrors to reflect natural light during the day is great for expanding a space. Place a mirror opposite the natural light source so that it’s projected back into the room.
Having ample
lighting options is also great for maintaining the illusion when the sun sets. Tall, thin, free standing lamps and desk lamps won’t take up much space but will increase the amount of light in the room, thereby making it feel bigger.
