As the first inklings of Christmas appear across their network, the PR automation platform, Press Loft, is already spotting consistent themes and trends across the products being added to the site by their 1400 brands. Here is a round-up of their five key decorating trend predictions for Christmas 2022

On the whole, consumers are moving away from fast, fleeting trends and we will see this apply to Christmas in 2022 too. Whilst the trends identified here are still distinctive in terms of style, customers are likely to follow only the one that best compliments their personality and year-round decor, and see it as an extension of their overall style.

With environmental and economic pressures being felt around the world right now, the lifecycle of these trends will be significantly longer than in previous years. This is because customers are expected to opt for reusable, seasonless, and multifunctional products over ones that are traditionally Christmas-themed to extend their functionality whilst also saving on cost and minimising waste. These considerations and shifts in purchase decisions will underpin the adoption and application of each of these five trends.

1. Merry & Bright

Carrying the same sophistication but sitting on the opposite side of the spectrum to Botanical Accents in terms of palette, those who love colour will be satisfied by Merry & Bright. We’ve seen dopamine dressing dominate this year, and now we welcome dopamine decorating. The combination of jewel tones and neons paired with metallic accents makes for a setting that will surely bring a smile to many faces this Christmas.

2. Retro Flair

Driven by nostalgia and heavily influenced by the ‘60s and ‘70s, consumers are expected to carry their affinity for all things retro right through to Christmas. Whether it’s purchasing decorations or bold graphic wrapping paper, or having a rummage through their family’s boxes of old ornaments to pair with their more recently purchased ones, we can expect a lot of festive styling that nods to Christmases gone by.

3. Botanical Accents

An evolution of minimalist Christmas styles we’ve seen over recent years, we can expect natural textures and earthy tones to be paired with foliage and blooming botanicals. The addition of green further meets the ongoing shift in people wanting to recreate green spaces within their homes, however, pairings with gold accents and pops of black create a more sophisticated, polished approach than the rustic-leaning style we’ve seen previously.

4. Pastel Scandi

Continuing with colour but in a different application, as historic ‘rules’ for design and seasonality continue to fade, we are seeing pastel become more and more popular for Christmas. Coupled with a Scandi influence in terms of practicality and style, lovers of pastel hues can enjoy them year-round and create cosy settings without sacrificing colour.

5. Whimsigoth

With anything celestial or zodiac inspired continuing to be a favourite of consumers, it’s of little surprise we’re seeing it through into Christmas too. Deep, moody blues and purples are elevated with moon, sun and star motifs, as well as metallic accents that appear aged. This results in settings that are cosy and comforting, but still feel special and celebratory. Nostalgia is also a driver here; a good guide would be, if it looked like it belonged on the set of Sabrina The Teenage Witch, then it fits this trend.
