New research has found that the majority of wallpaper brands that claim to be eco-friendly are selling products that contain ecologically harmful materials.
The study, which was carried out by design studio Bobbi Beck, covered more than 60 leading wallpaper brands from the UK, US and Australia.
It was discovered that the harmful materials most commonly sold include metallic and vinyl wallpapers, both of which have a negative impact on the planet.
CEO of Bobbi Beck, James Mellan-Matulewicz said: "Unfortunately, the vast majority of wallpapers contain PVC and are usually produced using virgin materials that are not recyclable.
"These plastics typically take the form of coatings, synthetic fibres or self-adhesive backings and they're almost impossible to recycle through general means."
75% of the brands researched sell metallic wallpaper and/or use solvent or UV inks in their manufacturing. These materials often contain harmful chemicals, toxins and irritants, including arsenic and lead.
James Mellan-Matulewicz added: "Not only are metallics and chemical inks bad for the planet, they're harmful to people too. Unfortunately it's still too easy for companies to claim to be 'eco-friendly' while selling products that are bad for people and the planet."
